Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Institutional Ignorance: Making AI Work for Access and Equity in Teacher Education
Chris Bigum and Leonie Rowan
This ATEA Virtual Seminar Session will explore the disruptive and transformative potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning for initial teacher education. We are motivated by a foundational interest in identifying opportunities that will help teacher educators address patterns of inequity and injustice that persist within our educational landscape. Building on a wave of interest in ChatGPT (and an equally big mix of uncertainty, excitement, confusion, and hope) we will acknowledge commonly voiced educational concerns—originality/rigor/integrity"—but focus primarily on understanding ChatGPT, and roles it might play in justice-oriented work of teacher educators. Drawing upon current research about AI and the use of LLMs we highlight what different approaches to ChatGPT (in research and in teaching) can offer to different people; the ways in which some groups of learners (and educators) might become more (or less) empowered through various uses of AI, and implications for our profession.
Our goal is to ensure that participants leave with both a general understanding of what ChatGPT is, and what it is not (it is not a search engine!) and the confidence to explore—with hopeful but non-stupid optimism—how AI might be made useful in your particular contexts, to support your research and your teaching in ways that ultimately benefit diverse learners.
In the words of ChatGPT: "Whether you're an AI enthusiast, or simply curious about the future of technology, this seminar is not to be missed. Register today for what promises to be an exhilarating and informative event."
And ChatGPT is always right....isn't it? isn’t it???
(Spoiler: No. it’s definitely not always right: but the seminar WILL be great!)
