Understanding Teacher Retention: 12-Year Insights from Beginning Educators - in a Docudrama format

This session focuses on longitudinal research into teacher transitions and addresses the vital need to attract and retain teachers who can adapt to an ever-changing and increasingly unpredictable future.
The retention of teachers is an ongoing issue across the world and over time, and more recently, we are seeing teacher shortages that have placed the teaching profession in crisis.
The findings from my longitudinal research into 12 teachers’ professional journeys across 12 years provides opportunities to discuss what we can do as teacher educators to assist in preventing teacher attrition.
The research is presented as a docudrama – a dramatisation based on real interviews. The full docudrama consists of 6 episodes. Each episode focuses on a theme: relationships; wellbeing; considering alternatives; employment conditions; workload; and creating work-life balance. In this session we will watch and discuss one episode: creating work-life balance, and what has impacted these teachers’ decisions to stay in or leave the profession.
The docudrama is an accessible resource for teacher educators to use in ITE, and to build on with regards to research that sheds light on pressing educational issues, and advocates for necessary reforms.
