Insights from the ATWD: Informing the role of teacher educators  (AITSL)

Presented by: Dr Tee Schofield

The Australian Teacher Workforce Data (ATWD) initiative provides a national, longitudinal database that delivers a comprehensive picture of Australia’s teaching supply and workforce over time, across jurisdictions and sectors. The ATWD is the evidence base for teaching careers, from ITE through to departure from the workforce.

The ATWD is valuable to teacher educators as it gives them data-driven insights into the world of teaching and career pathways that the current cohort of future teachers will be navigating.

Recent findings from the ATWD provide data and analysis on trends in commencements, the number of graduates available to enter the workforce, and completion rates. Recent improvements in the ATWD have allowed clearer identification of the complex trends in mixed early childhood/primary programs of study. This includes data on early career teachers and their experiences as they transition from ITE studies and into the classroom.

The future of the ATWD promises a broader scope of work with applicability to teacher educators and ITE providers, and this will be outlined in the presentation.
